Mandela Economics Scholars Program

departure for training in the U.S.

Aurora administers a program that provides technical assistance and training to help South Africa plan, reform and direct its economic destiny.

In 1983, Aurora began implementing the highly successful South African Higher Education Program. The Educational Opportunities Council, headed by Bishop Desmond Tutu, selected the students. This program was responsible for providing undergraduate through post-graduate degree training for over 200 disadvantaged students. Today, graduates hold senior positions in Parliament, industry and commerce, academia, civil society organizations and even the highest court in the land.

Strengthen South African economic policy and increase the technically qualified human resources of South Africa’s historically disadvantaged population.

Aurora now manages the Mandela Economic Scholars Program. The program was launched after the United States and South African governments established a Bi-National Commission with a mandate to address South Africa’s reconstruction needs. One of the Commission’s most important initiatives, The Mandela Economics Scholars Program, addresses the need for world-class, technically qualified economists to help guide South Africa’s government, business and industry. Scores of doctoral and masters degree candidates in economics and economics-related fields have graduated or are pursuing degrees at America’s most prestigious colleges and universities, including Cornell, Harvard, Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Michigan State University.
